Histoire du calumet et de la danse, notebook, 1734.

Original manuscript handwritten by Le Sueur in the front of a notebook. The notebook was subsquently written in by Claude Virot to record, in Latin and Abenaki, instructions concerning the Mass, Catechism, birth and marriage rituals, and fragments of translations from the New Testament. The notebook is a theological look at what the author may have considered heresy in the Abenaki as he worked as a priest within the community.

Jacques Le Sueur was a Jesuit who did missionary work with the Abenaki Indians. Claude Virot was a Jesuit who worked with the Abenaki Indians. Calumet dance was introduced to the Abenaki in part by the the Fox Indians of Wisconsin in an attempt to draw them away from their French alliance.
